Gollum Biography
I’d have to say, Gollum is third in my list of favorites from my Lord of the Rings Action Figure collection. I know, I know, but he makes a cool action figure. At first he was identified as Sméagol and was a Hobbit of the Stoor folk. He was soon after called Gollum after his habit of making a terrible swallowing sound in his throat. Such noises could communicate almost anything from excitement and happiness to grief and anger. Gollum’s living was extended far past its usual confines by the effects of having the One Ring. His one wish was to have the Ring that had imprisoned him. He went after the Ring for more than seventy years after losing it to Bilbo Baggins.
Throughout his numerous years under the Ring’s power, he developed a sort of split personality. One personality was Sméagol still distantly remembered things like companionship and affection, while Gollum was a slave to the Ring who knew only deceitfulness and aggression. In The Two Towers, Samwise Gamgee called the good persona “Slinker” after his submissive, eager-to-please demeanour. Sam named the bad persona “Stinker”. The two personalities often argued when Gollum spoke to himself. This came about because he never had anyone else to talk to. He had a love/hate relationship, mirroring Gollum’s outlook for the Ring and for himself. Sméagol was once a hobbit who came from from the clan of the Stoors, who lived close to the Gladden Fields.
Gollum is the most mystifying and paradoxical individual in the fantasy adventure “The Lord of the Rings”. Gollum’s life can be separated into numerous periods, although gathered information is not that dependable. Before the Ring came into his ownership, Gollum was a hobbit of the clan of the Stoors, who lived near the Gladden Fields. His real name, Smeagol, was a translation of his Westron name, which means to “burrow-deep”. After Smeagol with his friend Deagol went fishing and they fished the One Ring out of the Anduin. No one assumed its negative power at that time. But the ring worked on the hobbit’s consciousness and Smeagol even choked his friend just to get the Ring. However he called the Ring his birthday present and said it came from his grandmother, who had lots of stunning things of that kind.
Overall, Gollum is a negative creature. Although, he dislikes both Good and Evil, he takes neither side. In the War of the Ring he’s on his own side looking out for himself. He can be controlled, but for what reason?
So, we can just empathize with Gollum. Throughout all his life he was under the Ring’s power. Together with the ring, he falls into the fire. This ending is pretty expected. He effectively accomplishes the Company of Nine’s task, although not urgently wanting to rescue the planet.
